The name “KOLLYWOOD” was described from the neighbouring place Kodambakkam in Tamil Nadu. Kollywood was a nickname from being a portmanteau of Kodambakkam & Hollywood. Tamil Nadu which has the largest tourism industry in India. Kollywood is the most popular for Tamil language movie sector in India. This is an emerging tourism, which battles between tourism & Kollywood saga.

Several Tamil movies had been shoot in abroad, whereas its always been obsessed to shoot in abroad like, Irandam Ulagam (Georgia), Vishwaroopam 2 (Thailand), Villu (Italy), Billa (Malaysia), Singam II (Kenya), Kanthaswamy (Mexico, Tanzania, Kenya, Italy & Switzerland) and Unnale Unnale (Australia). This trend was all started for the movie Sivandha Mann in 1969. It was extensively shooted in Switzerland, France & the Alps. This film success inspired many, later Tamil & Telugu films where shooted in foreign locations. This has now transcended its boundaries across the world, Tamil movies like Sivaji (Bilbao, Vizcaya, Pais Vasco Spain & New York city) & Enthiran (Lenute, Maranhenses, Maranho, Brazil, Machu Picchu, Peru, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Rio de Janeiro, Manoi, Vietnam Vienna & Austria). As Aasal with Aarambam was shooted in UAE & Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore was also added to recent destinations to the Tamil film industry. Kerala & Karnataka has also given way to destinations as more movie producers/directors may go westwards to film their movie songs.

The Tamil film industry later had a profound effect on other filmmaking industries of India, establishing Chennai as a Secondary Hub for Hindi Cinema and other South Indian film industries too, as well as Srilankan film industry. Over the 20th Century Tamil films from India established a distribution to an overseas theatres in Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Japan, The Middle East, parts of Africa, Oceania, Europe, North America and other countries. Tamil Nadu has been entrusted with the promotion of tourism and development of tourist related infrastructure. Tamil Nadu with a GDP of $150 billion is the second largest economy of the country and Tourism is one of the main sources of its revenue. Tourism in the state is promoted by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation headquartered in the capital city of Chennai. Tamil Nadu is a year-round tourist destination, and the industry is the largest in the country. To tap Tamil Nadu’s tourism potential, the State government will launch a massive tourism promotion project aimed at attracting more domestic and international tourists by identifying specific circuits, Deputy Chief Minister O.Panneerselvam said here on Friday. A sum of ₹100 crore has been provided as initial investment for the project in the Budget Estimate.
